chapter2229
Resolute, Nathaniel stood his ground.
Cecilia sighed. "Really, you don't have to. How can I work with you here?"
"Then let me help with your workload. How about that?" Nathaniel pressed.
His earnest expression told her he meant every word, and she found herself speechless.
"Fine. Stay just for today," she finally yielded.
Nathaniel had staff deliver the rest of the company files.
Arnold hesitated; after all, Nathaniel was technically an outsider.
Cecilia told her, "It's all right. Nathaniel isn't about to plot for my estate."
First, Nathaniel's own firm rivaled hers in size.
Second, whatever they left would one day pass to their four sons anyway.
All four boys were Nathaniel's children, so motive was nil.
Besides, someone as proudly self-sufficient as Nathaniel would never covet a woman's assets.
Hearing her verdict, Arnold finally handed every file to Nathaniel.
Nathaniel told Cecilia, "Your new assistant isn't bad."
He liked that she hadn't surrendered the paperwork just because of his status but had checked with Cecilia first.
Cecilia smiled. "Right? Charlotte recommended her; they're classmates."
Her easy smile only made the knot in Nathaniel's chest tighten.
Two nights ago had been a nightmare, yet she still acted as if nothing had happened.
"Ceci."
"Mm? What's wrong?" she asked.
"Nothing. How about you rest today? Hand me everything and I'll handle it," Nathaniel offered.
Eyes on her computer, she shook her head. "I rested yesterday. The company's got
a backlog that needs my decisions."
So intent on work, she failed to notice how off he looked.
Seeing that, he quit insisting, assuming she wanted labor to drown out the memories.
At least work was safer than brooding.
With that thought, he bowed over the files and got busy.
Outside the glass door, Arnold and the other secretaries kept stealing glances and whispering among themselves.
Nathaniel could hear one of them mutter, "Has the Imminence Corporation boss come to work for our CEO?"
Another snickered, "Does it even need asking? Obviously, yes."
A third sighed, "Lucky Cecilia-her husband's handsome, rich, and even worries she's overworked enough to pitch in."
Someone else chimed in, "Yeah, I'd kill for a husband like that."
A voice joked, "Take a hot shower tonight, dream hard, and you'll have everything in the dream..."
Their banter bounced around the corridor, leaving the outer office in an easy mood. Before anyone realized, the whole day had slipped away.
Cecilia shut down the computer as quitting time approached, stretched the kinks from her spine, and glanced toward Nathaniel's desk. A tower of neatly finished files already waited there.
"You already went through all of these?" Cecilia asked, unable to believe it.
Nathaniel nodded. "Yeah."
"Even with me it takes at least two
full days to get through a stack like this, and you've done it in half a day she said, walking over and picking up one of the folders.
She opened it and saw that Nathaniel hadn't just read the proposal, he had left pointed evaluations and sensibles
suggestions on every page.
Cecilia couldn't stop a rush of admiration.
Of course the straight-A prodigy really did excel at anything he touched.
"You're incredible," Cecilia said sincerely.
Nathaniel pulled her closer by the hand. "So if you ever need anything, let me handle it. Stop carrying everything alone."
"All right." Cecilia gave him a gentle smile.
